An Emerging Voice in Saudi Literature: A Conversation with Novelist Dr. Mohammed Hasan Alwan

A beaver building a dam in Portland, Oregon.

The flickering lights of a distant oil field.

A great Sufi philosopher traveling the globe.

These are just a few of the topics that have inspired the writings of award-winning Saudi novelist, Dr. Mohammed Hasan Alwan. The author of five novels and numerous short stories, Alwan’s, most recent novel, A Small Death, was released to critical acclaim across the Arab world, winning the 2017 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, the most prestigious literary prize in the Arab world. Through the story of the great Arab traveler and philosopher, Ibn Arabi, the novel explores how travel can change a person’s perceptions and shape their spiritual journey. Now Dr. Alwan is coming to the U.S. to read from his award-winning novel, and to share the story of his creative process and his pathway to inspiration.
